A prayed against, accursed, ἀρητὸς γόος Il.17.37, 24.741; ἀρατὸν ἕλκος S.Ant.972 (lyr.). II prayed for, desirable, Sapph.Supp.6.3; ἀ. καὶ σωτήριος γνώμη SIG656.17 (Abdera): hence Ἄρητος, Ἀρήτη, as pr.nn., the Prayed-for, Hom.: later Ἄρᾱτος. [ᾱρ Ep., ᾰρ Att.]
