[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιη είναι η σχέση του εχθρός με τον συγγενή τ. έχθος. Επικρατέστερη είναι η άποψη ότι αρχικός τ. είναι το εχθρός, (θ. εχθ- + επίθημα -ρο-ς), από τον οποίο παρήχθησαν τα παραθετικά εχθίων, έχθιστος και το ουδέτερο σιγμόληκτο όνομα έχθος, όπως ακριβώς στα κυδρός > κυδίων, κύδιστος, κύδος. Στην περίπτωση αυτή υπάρχει αντιστοιχία με το λατ. επίρρ. ext-ra «εκτός» και παράλληλη σημασιολογική εξέλιξη με το λατ. hostis. Η αρχική σημασία είναι «ξένος», «ο εκτός της κοινωνικής ομάδας άνθρωπος», η οποία εξελίσσεται στη σημασία «αντίπαλος», «μισητός». Αντίστοιχο επίρρ. εχθός «εκτός» υπάρχει στην Αρχ.
