[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. < hekwr, (το π του ήπαρ από το ΙΕ, χειλοϋπερωικό kw- πρβλ. sekw- > έκ-ομαι) < ΙE yēkwr (-t) «ήπαρ» με τροπή του y σε h και σίγηση του ληκτικού κλειστού -t. Η λ. συνδέεται με αρχ. ινδ. yakrt, yaknah, λατ. iecur, αβεστ. yākarә. Ως α' συνθετικό η λ. απαντά με τη μορφή ηπατ(ο)- (πρβλ. ηπατοσκόπος, ηπατοειδής). Στη ΝΕ η λ. ήπαρ χρησιμοποιείται κατ' εξοχήν στο ιατρικό λεξιλόγιο, ενώ ευρύτερα χρησιμοποιείται η λ. συκώτι για τη δήλωση τόσο του αντίστοιχου μέρους του σώματος όσο και του φαγητού. Σημειωτέον ότι το συκώτι προέρχεται από το συκωτόν (< σύκο) ήπαρ, που δήλωνε το συκώτι τών ζώων που είχαν τραφεί με ξηρά σύκα. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι με τον ίδιο τρόπο δημιουργήθηκαν λ. με σημασία «συκώτι» σε άλλες γλώσσες, όπως λ.χ. στη λατ. ficatum (< ficus), ιταλ. fegato, γαλλ. foie.
