[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ανάγεται σε ΙΕ ρίζα kops(o)-, η οποία προήλθε πιθ. από ηχομίμηση. Συνδέεται με το αρχ. σλαβ. kosu «κοτσύφι» (< kopso-) και εμφανίζει κατάλ. -ι-χος (πρβλ. μείλ-ι-χος). Ο τ. κόσσυφος < κόψυ-φος με αφομοίωση. Εμφανίζει κατάλ. -φος (πρβλ. άργυφος). Στα μεσαιωνικά χρόνια μεταπλάστηκε σε κόσσυφας και από τον τ. αυτό προήλθε το νεοελλ. κότσυφας].
