Etymology: Uncertain; the name will be very old, cf. the fact that he is called the son of the Earth; the name will be Pre-Greek. There is no explanation for the coexistence of the two names (after αὐτοχθονος?) cf. the name in -ων of Hermes; cf. Ερυσίχθων. Is the form with -χσ- an Atticism, or is it wider spread? Connection with ἐρέχθω is improbable.

In Greek mythology, King Erichthonius (/ərɪkˈθoʊniəs/; Ancient Greek: Ἐριχθόνιος) was a legendary early ruler of ancient Athens. According to some myths, he was autochthonous (born of the soil, or Earth) and raised by the goddess Athena. Early Greek texts do not distinguish between him and Erechtheus, his grandson, but by the fourth century BC, during Classical times, they are distinct figures.

Ο Εριχθόνιος ήταν μυθικός βασιλιάς της Αθήνας. Βασίλεψε αφού εξόρισε από το θρόνο τον Αμφικτύονα. Σύμφωνα με τη μυθολογία ήταν μισός άνθρωπος και μισός φίδι. Ήταν αυτός που τοποθέτησε το ξύλινο άγαλμα της Αθηνάς σε ναό αφιερωμένο στη θεά (στους κλασικούς χρόνους φυλασσόταν στο Ερέχθειο) και ίδρυσε γιορτή προς τιμή της, τα Αθήναια. Αργότερα ο Θησέας όταν ένωσε όλες τις αθηναϊκές κοινότητες σε μία, μετονόμασε τη γιορτή σε Παναθήναια.
