English (LSJ)

ᾰρος, τό,

A lethargy, coma, Nic.Th.189, Hsch. ; expld. by στέρησις τῆς ψυχῆς, Hdn.Gr.2.770.    II as Adj., slothful, sleepy, Suid.

German (Pape)

[Seite 272] αρος, τό, mit Schlaf verbundene Trägheit, Hesych. erkl. νύσταξις u. νωθεία, tiefer Todesschlaf, Nic. Ther. 189. – Auch adj., VLL, erkl. δυσκίνητος, träg, langsam, u. leiten es von νη u. ὀχέω ab. Vgl. aber κάρος.

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

νῶκαρ: -ᾰρος, τό, νύσταξις, νωθρότης, Νικ. Θηρ. 189, «νῶκαρ· νύσταξις, νοθεία, κακόσχολος ἔννοια» Ἡσύχ. ΙΙ. ὡς ἐπίθ., ὀκνηρός, νυσταλέος, δυσκίνητος, Σουΐδ.· οὕτω καὶ νωκᾰρώδης, ες, Δίφιλος ἐν «Ἀπολιπούσῃ» 2.

Greek Monolingual

νῶκαρ, -αρος, τὸ (Α)
1. λήθαργος, κώμα

Frisk Etymological English

-αρος
Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: lethargy, coma (Nic; Hdn. who explains it as στέρησις τῆς ψυχῆς; it is also translated as νύσταξις); also as adj.

Etymology: Fur.133 connects the word with νωχελής, which fits better semantically (the translation Totenschlaf, Frisk, is inspired by a wrong etymology), and denies that it has anything to do with νεκρός, νέκυς. On words in -αρ s. Fur. 134 n. 75.
