Compounds: ἀερσί-ποδες lifting their feet (Il.); μετήορος (being) in the air, Att. μετέωρος, Aeol. πεδάορος (or from ἀήρ?).
Derivatives: ἄρσις f. raising (Arist.); ἀρτήρ?
Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [1150] *h₂uer-? raise?
Etymology: Not from ἀήρ air (which has long a-). No cognates known, but the form requires *h₂uer-. S. also ἀείρω 2.
See also: ἀρτήρ, αἰώρα, αἰωρέω; cf. also 2. ἄρμα, ἠερέθονται, αἰωρέω.

Derivatives: ἀορτήρ, -ῆρος m. *`what is bound (together)', sword-belt; the o-vocalism unclear:' (Od.); ἀορτή artery (from the heart), aorta (Hp.). On ἄορ s.v..
Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [1150] *h₂uer-? bind
Etymology: Mostly connected with a root for to bind, hang on, strick in Balto-Slavic, e. g. Lith. virvė̃ strick, OCS obora (< ob-vora) strick. The best connection is Alb. vjer hang up. [Note that in Dutch ophangen is a very frequent combination.] With su̯- Lith. sveriú, sver̃ti to weigh etc. - Solmsen Untersuchungen 289ff. separated it from ἀείρω 1. raise, DELG tends to consider the second as a specialization of the first (extensive discussion).

Frisk Etymology German
ἀείρω: 1.
{aeírō}
Forms: att. αἴρω, wahrscheinlich zum Fut. att. ἀ̄ρῶ aus ἀερῶ neugebildet (anders Brugmann KZ 27, 196ff.)
Grammar: v.
Meaning: emporheben, aufheben.
Derivative: Verbalnomina: ἄρσις f. Hebung (Arist. usw.; κάταρσις Th.); ἀρτήρ s. d.
Etymology: Unerklärt. Gegen den sonst einleuchtenden Vorschlag von Buttmann Lexilogus 1, 260 A. 5 und von Bréal MSL 15, 149f., ἀείρω als Denominativum von ἀ̄ήρ abzuleiten wie nhd. lüften, nschw. lyfta von Luft, spricht die verschiedene Quantität des anlautenden ἀ-; doch ist dieser Einwand vielleicht nicht entscheidend (Frisk Eranos 32, 55f.). Verfehlt Margadant IF 50, 122. — Mit ἀείρω ist μετήορος, att. μετέωρος, äol. πεδάορος in die Höhe gehoben semantisch verknüpft. Es kann aber auch eine Hypostase von ἀήρ sein. Vgl. αἰώρα, αἰωρέω; s. auch 2. ἄρμα.

{aeírō}
Forms: (Κ 499 σὺν δ’ ἤειρεν ἱμᾶσι, Ο 680 πίσυρας συναείρεται ἵππους), vgl. ξυναίρεται· συνάπτεται H.
Grammar: v.
Meaning: zusammenbinden, zusammenkoppeln
συνωρίς, -ίδος f. Zweigespann; von συνωρίς stammt συνωρικεύεται fährt mit einem Zweigespann (Ar. Nub. 15), das als Grundlage erwartete *συνωρικός fehlt; von συνωρίς ebenfalls συνωριαστής ‘Lenker e-r συνωρίς’ (Luk.), das eigentlich ein Verb *συνωριάζειν voraussetzt. — Als Kontrastbildung zu συνήορος dient παρήορος, παράσρος (Il. usw.) ‘beigeschirrt(es Pferd)’, außerdem ausgestreckt und unvernünftig (darüber Leumann Hom. Wörter 222ff.); ebenso scheint neben συναείρω ein παραείρω existiert zu haben, allerdings nur in einer abweichenden Verwendung belegt: Π 341 παρηέρθη δὲ κάρη der Kopf hing zur Seite, vgl. Leumann a. a. O. Auch die vereinzelt vorkommenden ἀπήορος weit entfernt, ἐπήορος darüber hängend, κατήσρος herabhängend (mit κατωρίς herabhängendes Band) werden von Solmsen hierhergezogen, aber wenigstens die beiden letztgenannten gehören vielmehr mit μετήορος, μετέωρος zusammen, s. ἀείρω 1]]. und ἀήρ.
Etymology: Zu ἀείρω anbinden gehört mit regelmäßiger o-Abtönung das Nomen actioms ἀορτή eig. *das Anbinden, das Anhängen, konkret ‘angebundener, angehängter Gegenstand, Sack (zum Anhängen)’ (Men. usw.), als mediz. Ausdruck Bez. der Bronchien und der schlauchähnlichen Aorta (Hp., Arist. u. a.). Ferner das Nomen agentis od. instrumenti ἀορτήρ, -ῆρος m. eig. *Anbinder, Anhänger, das Koppel an dem das Schwert hängt, Wehrgehenk; der o-Vokalismus ist nicht erklärt: nach ἄορ (Schulze Q. 206) oder ἀορτή?, kaum äolisch. — Daneben ἀόρτης (Pap., H.) und ἀορτεύς (H.). Eine denominative oder deverbative Bildung liegt im Ptz. ἀορτηθείς aufgehängt (AP) vor. — ἄσρτρα n. pl. Lungenlappen (Hp.) nach den Nomina auf -τρον, Chantraine Formation 331f. Unsicher ἄορ, -ορος n. Schwert, s. d. — Hierher ἀρτάω aufhängen, s. d.
