μορφή της ελληνικής μυθολογίας φορτισμένη με συμβολικά στοιχεία και με γνωρίσματα ήρωα, ημιθέου και θεού, ιδρυτή μυστηριακών τελετών και ιερέα, περίφημος αοιδός, μουσικός και ποιητής, γιος του Απόλλωνος ή του θρακικού ποταμού Οιάγρου, και της μούσας Καλλιόπης, ο οποίος έλαβε μέρος στην αργοναυτική εκστρατεία.
[ΕΤΥΜΟΛΟΓΙΑ Άγνωστης ετυμολ. Πρόκειται πιθ. για μυθικό όν. προελληνικής προελευσης. Κατ' άλλη άποψη, η λ. αποτελεί παρ. του orbho- (πρβλ. ὀρφανός), λόγω του ότι ο Ορφεύς είχε στερηθεί τη σύζυγό του].
