Meaning: sieve (Ar. fr. 480). Cf. αἰρόπινον σκοτεινόν, καὶ κόσκινον ἐν ᾧ πυροὶ σήθονται; An. Bk. 359, 24 continues with ὑπερ τοῦ τάς αἶρας διελθεῖν; also αἰρόπινον· τὸ ἀραιὸν κόσκινον· παρὰ τὸ τὰς αἶρας ποιεῖν ἀπεῖναι καὶ χωρίζειν η διὰ τὸ αἴρειν τὸν πίνον ὅ ἐστι τὸν ῥύπον EM 38, 42

Etymology: DELG thinks that it consists of αἴρω (remove) and πίνος filth; for the type Schwyzer 442. Or was it reshaped by folk etymology?
