ἀπφά: ἢ ἄπφα, θωπευτικὴ προσαγόρευσις κυρίως μεταξὺ ἀδελφῶν, «ὅτι τῶν συγγενικῶν ὀνομάτων τὰ μέν ἐστι κοινὰ πάντων, οἷον πατήρ, μήτηρ, ἀδελφὸς καὶ τὰ ὅμοια· λέγω δὲ ὅτι πᾶς ἂν εἴποι πατέρα τὸν δεῖνα τοῦ δεῖνος, καὶ υἱὸν καὶ ἀδελφόν· τὰ δὲ ἐκ τοῦ προσώπου λέγεται ἰδίως, οἷον ἄπφαν τὴν ἀδελφὴν Ἀττικῶς μόνη ἡ ἀδελφὴ εἴποι ἄν, καὶ πάμπαν τὸν πατέρα μόνοςπαῖς… Ἰστέον δὲ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ ἄπφα γίνεται καὶ τὸ ἄπφιον, ὑποκόρισμα ὄν ἐρωμένης· τινὲς δὲ καὶ τὸ ἄπφα ὑποκόρισμά φασιν Ἀττικόν· ὁ μέν τοι ἀπφὺς παρὰ Θεοκρίτῳ πατρὸς κλῆσις, ἣν βρέφος ἂν προσείποι, πατέρα τὸν ἀφ’ οὗ ἔφυ· τιοῦτον γάρ τι ἡ λέξις ὑποβάλλει νοεῖν» Εὐστ. 565. 23· πρβλ.
