   A of or called after Io, epith. of the sea between Epirus and Italy, at the mouth of the Adriatic sea, across which Io swam, πόντιος μυχὸς . . Ἰόνιος κεκλήσεται, τῆς σῆς πορείας μνῆμα A.Pr. 840; another expl. in Theopomp.Hist.125; Ἰ. κόλπος Hdt.6.127, Th.1.24; θάλασσα, πόρος, Pi.P.3.68, N.4.53; also simply ὁ Ἰόνιος Th. 6.30; later Ἰόνιον πέλαγος AP6.251 (Phil.).
