Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: βινεῖ. καὶ πνεῖ. Κύπριοι H.
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [469] *gʷei̯H- force, force down
Etymology: In the first meaning after Kretschmer KZ 31, 383 from IE. *gui̯ā́-i̯ei as denominative of *gʷi̯ā́ = Skt. jyā́ beside βία (from *guíi̯ā) force (s. also βινέω), which requires a high date and separation of βία. - As πνεῖ the form may stand for ζάη = *δι-ά(Ϝ)η, from ἄ(Ϝ)ημι, with thematic inflection. Hoffmann Dial. 1, 114, Solmsen KZ 34, 557, Schwyzer 659.
