be softened: use also P. and V. τέγγεσθαι (Plato but rare P.), V. μαλθακίζεσθαι, πεπανθῆναι (1st aor. pass. of πεπαίνειν).
mitigate: P. and V. ἐπικουφίζειν, ἀπαντλεῖν (Plato), V. ἐξευμαρίζειν; see mitigate.
