Nomen traxerunt ab Achaemene (Persice: Haxāmaniš, "qui est benigni animi"), duce aut rege Persarum septimi saeculi a.C.n. Imperii Persarum conditor habetur Cyrus II, 'magnus' cognominatus, qui anno 550 a.C.n. Medos sibi subiecit. Fines imperii maxime propagavit Darius I (521-486), cui omnes populi Asiae ab Indo flumine usque ad oras maris Aegaei, praeterea Aegyptii cum Graecis Cyrenaicis, et in Europa Thraces Macedonesque paruerunt.
