Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: kind of falcon (Arist.); see Thompson Birds.
Other forms: Cf. αἰσάρων εἶδος ἱέρακος H.
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Etym. unknown. Thracian acc. to Krause (s. αἴσακος). Kretschmer Glotta 11, 281 thought it was substantivised from a Pelasgian-Tyrrhenian *αἴσαρος = ἱερός, cf. ἱέραξ (doubtful). Fur. 387 gives it as pre-Greek with ρ\/λ, of which he has more than 30 examples.

Frisk Etymology German

αἰσάλων: {aisálōn}
Grammar: m.
Meaning: Falkenart, vgl. Thompson Birds s. v. (Arist., Ael., Plin.), αἰσάρων· εἶδος ἱέρακος H.
Etymology : Herkunft unbekannt. Nach Krause (s. αἴσακος) thrakisch. Nach Kretschmer Glotta 11, 281 aus einem pelasgisch-tyrrhenischen *αἴσαρος = ἱερός substantiviert. Aber das synonyme ἱέραξ gehört nicht zu ἱερός heilig, sondern, wie Kretschmer selbst hervorhebt, zu (ϝ)ιερός rasch.
