   A one must stand off from, i.e. give up, abandon, πολέμου Th.8.2, etc.; οὐκ . . ἀ. τῇ πόλει τούτων D.18.199: abs., οὐκ ἀ. πρίν . . Pl.Plt.257c.    II later, ἀφίστημι one must keep apart, detain, ἵππον ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων Gp. 16.1.4.
