Η λ. αυχμός συνδέεται με τα αύος, αύω μέσω ενός επιθηματικού στοιχείου -χμ- (πρβλ. νεοχμός), κατά μία άποψη δε ανάγεται πιθ. σε τ. sauks-mos < sausk-mos (πρβλ. αρχ. ινδ. śuska-) Ο όρος αυχμός απαντά στον Εμπεδοκλή, τον Ηρόδοτο και στην Ιωνική-Αττική με σημασία «ξηρασία», από την οποία στον Πλάτωνα προέκυψε η έννοια «της ρυπαρότητας». Η λ. έχει παράλληλο μεταγενέστερο τ. αυχμή.
