|etymtx=Grammatical information: m. pl.<br />Meaning: [[Helots]], name of the serfs of the state of the Spartans (Ion.-Att.).<br />Other forms: Fem. <b class="b3">Εἱλωτίς</b> (Plu., St. Byz.).<br />Derivatives: <b class="b3">Εἱλωτικός</b> [[helotic]] (Paus., Plu.), <b class="b3">εἱλωτεύω</b> <b class="b2">be Helote</b> (Isoc.) with <b class="b3">εἱλωτεία</b> <b class="b2">the position of Helots</b> (Pl., Arist.).<br />Origin: XX [etym. unknown]<br />Etymology: Proper meaning unknown and so without certain etymology. Acc. to ancient commentators prop. inhabitants of the Laconian city <b class="b3">῝Ελος</b>; phonet. untenable.
