Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f. pl.
Meaning: young animals, small lams (ι 222).
Origin: see ἔρση
Etymology: Prob. just metonymic = ἕρση dew. Thus δρόσος in A. and Call. (s. s. v.), cf. also μητέρες ψακαλοῦχοι (S. Fr. 793) with ψάκαλον (Ar. Byz.) from ψακάς fine rain, drops; more in Bechtel Lex. s. ἕρση. - After Leumann Hom. Wörter 258 n. 11 δρόσος as young animal in A. and Call. from imitation of ι 222 and ἕρσαι a homonym to ἕρση dew.
