After Specht Ursprung 145 to OE [[hlyn]] [[noise]] with [[ablaut]] (<b class="b2">o)i</b> : [[u]] (?). Cf. [[κολοίφρυξ]]. - That <b class="b3">κολῳάω</b>, <b class="b3">-ῳός</b> should be separated from <b class="b3">κολοιάω</b>, <b class="b3">-οιός</b> (e. g. Bq), is very improbable. The special notation with <b class="b3">-ῳ-</b> (in <b class="b3">ἐκολῴα Β</b> 212) arose perhaps as (metrically lengthened) mixform of <b class="b3">*ἐκολόα</b> (with regular loss of the intervocalic <b class="b3">ι</b> as in Lesb. <b class="b3">εὑνόαν</b> a. o.; Schwyzer 236) and <b class="b3">*ἐκολοία</b>; cf. also <b class="b3">κολουᾶν θορυβεῖν</b> H. - The variation may be of Pre-Greek origin.
