|etymtx=Grammatical information: v.<br />Meaning: only <b class="b3">κνυζώσω</b> (ν 401), <b class="b3">κνύζωσεν</b> (ν 433), of the eyes of Odysseus, that, while earlier <b class="b3">περικαλλέα ἐόντα</b>, were made dim and dark by Athena.<br />Origin: PIE[Proto-Indo-European]X[probably] [559] <b class="b2">*kneu-g-</b>, <b class="b2">-k-</b> <b class="b2">get somber</b>?<br />Etymology: The basis seems preserved in <b class="b3">κνυζοί οἱ τὰ ὄμματα πονοῦντες</b>, <b class="b3">κνυζόν ἀέρα ἐπινέφελον καὶ πνευματώδη</b> H. (unclear Anacr. 87); cf. Büchner Herm. 75, 156 n. 1. Connection with <b class="b3">κνύζα</b> [[scratch]], <b class="b3">κνύω</b> is quite probable; the correspondence with <b class="b3">κνυζάομαι</b> is therefore prob. accidental. A remarkable parallel gives Lith. <b class="b2">kniáuktis</b> <b class="b2">get cloudy, cover oneself (of heaven), take a somber aspect</b> beside <b class="b2">kniaũkti</b> [[miaow]]; comparable <b class="b2">niaũras</b> [[cloudy]], [[somber]], [[troubled]], also [[grumbling]], [[nasalizing]], <b class="b2">niauróti</b> [[growl]], [[of bears]]. The word can be of independent (onomatopoetic or other) origin or show semantic analogy, can hsrdly be decided. Cf. Fraenkel Lit. et. Wb. s. <b class="b2">kniáuka</b> and <b class="b2">niauróti</b>. - Diff. on <b class="b3">κνυζός</b>, <b class="b3">-όω</b> (to <b class="b2">ken-</b> <b class="b2">press together</b>), certainly not better, WP. 1, 391, Pok. 559.
