[[stringō]] [[string]], [[tie together]], if from <b class="b2">*strengō</b> with analog. [[i]] in [[strictus]], Latv. [[stringu]], [[stringt]] (zero grade) <b class="b2">become stiff</b>, also [[wither]] (from [[shrivel]], [[contract]]), MIr. [[srengim]] [[draw]], [[drag]], NIr. [[sreang]] [[strand]], [[strick]], Germ., e.g. OHG [[strang]], OWNo. [[strengr]] (from <b class="b2">*strang-i-</b>) <b class="b2">id.</b>, OWNo. [[strangr]], OS [[strang]], OHG [[strengi]] <b class="b2">stretched, stiff, unbendible, streng etc.</b> with Norw. [[strengja]] <b class="b2">draw stiff</b>, NHG [[anstrengen]] etc., IE <b class="b2">*streng(h)-</b>, <b class="b2">strong(h)-</b>. But then <b class="b3">στραγγ-</b> must stand either as zero grade for <b class="b3">στραγ-</b> (= Latv. [[stringt]]; in <b class="b3">στραγ-ός</b>, <b class="b3">-εύομαι</b> beside <b class="b3">στραγγ-</b> still retained?) or have got the <b class="b3">α-</b>vowel secondarily, which would not surprise with the orig. popular character of this word group. As orig. meaning of this family we must posit [[string]], [[tie together]], which had in Greek a quite special development . Thus the drop, <b class="b3">στράγξ</b>, as "which strings, ties together," resp. "which is strung togethet" (as opposed to free running liquidity) interpreted; cf. <b class="b3">σύστρεμμα</b> also [[round drop of water]]. (Prop. from washing? Thierfelder by letter.) The meaning [[linger]], [[hesitate]] in <b class="b3">στραγ-γεύομαι</b> can be explained both from [[draw together]], [[congeal]] as from <b class="b2">run by drops (= slowly)</b>. -- Further forms and combinations a. lit. in WP. 2, 650f., Pok. 1036f., W.-Hofmann s. [[stringō]]. Lat. LW [loanword] [[strangūria]], [[strangulō]]. Cf. [[στρογγύλος]]. -- The word is no doubt Pre-Greek (cf. the variant without nasal, and the <b class="b2">a-</b>vocalism).
