With the anlaut and auslaut cf. e.g. ἀσπάλαξ beside σπάλαξ (Chantraine Form. 378); ἀσκαλώπας (-πᾶς?) like κελαινώπας (S. in lyr.), βύας, ἀτταγᾶς; the stemvowel after σκάλλω. -- Furnée 344 identifies the word with ἀσκαλωπ- and concludes that it was Pre-Greek. Anyhow the word looks Pre-Greek.
