|etymtx=-ίδος<br />Grammatical information: f.<br />Meaning: [[grasshopper]] (Il.).<br />Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]<br />Etymology: Hardly to [[κρίζω]] [[creak]] (Strömberg, Wortstud. 15ff), which leaves the [[ἀ-]] unexplained. Winter Prothet. Vokal 15 connected <b class="b3">κέρκα ἀκρίς</b> H. Fur. 127 accepts this, comparing [[γέλγις]] / [[ἄγλις]]. His further comparison with <b class="b3">ἄχηρον ἀκρίδα</b> H. (< <b class="b3">*ἀχερδον</b>, Bechtel Dial. 2, 671) is less convincing. A substr. word for a grasshopper is only to be expected.
