(from <b class="b2">coc(h)lea</b>) as backformation <b class="b3">κοχλιάριον</b> `[[spoon]], also as measure (Dsc., medic.); orig. name of a spoon, of which the sharp end was used to draw the snail from its shell; cf. W.-Hofmann s. <b class="b2">coc(h)lear</b>. Connection with <b class="b3">κόγχος</b>,<b class="b3">κόγχη</b> (s. v.) is evident; it has (Pre-Greek) prenasalization. Note also the vowel-variation in <b class="b3">κόχλαξ</b>\/ <b class="b3">κά-</b>.
