The late <b class="b3">μαιμάσσω</b> can have a purely enlarging -(<b class="b3">α)σσω</b> (Schwyzer 733), but it can also contain the velar in <b class="b3">μαι-μά-κ-της</b> etc. (Debrunner IF 21, 217).<br />Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]<br />Etymology: With <b class="b3">μαι-μά-ω</b> one connects partly the short-vowel yot-present <b class="b3">μά-ιο-μαι</b> [[strive]], partly the long-vowel verb <b class="b3">μῶ-μαι</b>, <b class="b3">μῶ-σθαι</b>; s. vv. with further connections. - Here also the semantically unclear <b class="b3">ἀ-μαιμάκετος</b> (with pleonastic(?) privative like <b class="b3">ἀβέλ-τερος</b>)?; cf. s. v. The reuplication can hardly be of IE origin; also the suffix <b class="b3">-ακ-</b> will be Pre-Greek.
