   A townsman, citizen, Il.11.242, Od.13.192, etc.; dist. from πολίτης, ἀστός being one who has civil rights only, πολίτης one who has political rights also, Arist.Pol.1278a34; ἀ. πικρὸς πολίταις E. Med.223; οἱ ἀ. the commons, opp. οἱ ἀγαθοί, Pi.P.3.71, cf. Isoc.3.21; opp. ξένος, Pi.O.7.90, Hdt.2.160, 3.8; esp. at Athens, Lys.6.17, Pl. Ap.30a, Isoc. l.c., cf.
