Lampadephoria was an ancient Greek type of relay race using a torch which was passed between the runners. The race was run usually on foot, but sometimes it was also on horses by ephebi (a Greek youth entering manhood). The winner was the first team to pass the torch over the finish line. If a torch went out the team would lose the race.

Tenían el nombre de lampadoforias nombre unas fiestas que celebraban los griegos durante las cuales encendían un gran número de lámparas en honor de Minerva, de Vulcano y de Prometeo en acción de gracias de haber la primera descubierto el aceite o enseñado a cultivar los olivos; el segundo inventado las lámparas y el tercero, haber traído el fuego del cielo.

Durante esta fiesta solían ejecutar unes juegos llamados lampadodromios, en los cuales se disputaban el premio de la corrida con una antorcha en la mano que no debían dejar apagar.
