A fall into, generally with a notion of violence, rush or burst in, ἐς τὰς πόλιας Hdt.5.15; ἐς τὰς νέας Id.8.56; ἐς οἴκημα Th.2.4, etc.; of the sea, Id.4.24 : poet. c. dat., ἐσπίπτει δόμοις E.Ion 1196. 2 simply, fall into, ἐς χωρίον Th.1.106; ἐς χαράδρας Id.3.98, etc.; ἐς.ἐς εἱρκτήν to be thrown into prison, Id.1.131: in Poets, c.acc., ἐσπεσοῦσα δικτύων βρόχους E.Or. 1315; ὄχλον γὰρ ἐσπεσεῖν ᾐσχυνόμην to go into the crowd, Id.Hel. 415; ἐς. πέπλους seek shelter within my robes, Id.Tr.1181; πτέρυγας ἐσπίτνων ἐμάς ib.751; κτύπου κέλευθον ἐσπεσόντος a noise having come into the street, Id.Or.1312. 3 fall into a certain condition, δούλειον ἦμαρ εἰ.
