Dor. εὐφᾱμέω, (εὔφημος)
A use words of good omen, opp. δυσφημέω: I avoid all unlucky words, during sacred rites: hence, as the surest mode of avoiding them, keep a religious silence, φέρτε δὲ χερσὶν ὕδωρ εὐφημῆσαί τε κέλεσθε Il.9.171, cf. Call.Ap.17, 18, etc.; mostly imper., εὐφήμει, εὐφημεῖτε, hush! be still! Ar.Nu.297, Ach. 241, al.; οἱ δὲ ἀμβώσαντες μέγα εὐφημέειν μιν ἐκέλευον Hdt.3.38; εὐφημεῖν χρὴ τὸν πρεσβύτην Ar.Nu.263; εὐφήμει τοῦτό γε, ἦν δ' ἐγώ Pl. Euthd.301a, cf.R.329c; οὐκ εὐφημήσεις; Id.Smp.214d:—Pass., εὔφημον εἴη τοὖπος εὐφημουμένῃ since you have been spoken fair, A.Supp. 512. II shout in triumph, Id.Ag.596, Eu.1035 (lyr.), Ar.Pl.758, D.S.5.49. 2 c. acc., honour by praise, speak well of, θεούς Pl.Epin. 992d, cf. X.Smp.4.49:—Pass., to be called by a mild name, πολιτεία . . εὐφημούμενος λῆρος D.S.37.17; also, to be honoured, Hp.Ep. 27, CIG4389 (Isauria); to be applauded, Ph.2.589; πρὸς πάντων -ηθείς Hdn.2.3.11; ὑπὸ ὄχλων Vett.Val.38.25. III sound triumphantly, κέλαδος Ἑλλήνων πάρα . . ηὐφήμησεν A.Pers.389; ὀλολυγμὸς εὐφημῶν Id.Ag.28.
