A dog-fly, i.e. shameless fly, abusive epith. applied by Ares to Athena, and by Hera to Aphrodite, Il.21.394, 421, cf. Ath.3.126a, 4.157a:—later κυνόμυια, Ezek.Exag.138, AP11.265 (Lucill.), Ael.NA4.51, Luc.Gall.31, etc.; ὦ γαστὴρ κυνόμυια APl. 1.9; of the plague of flies in Egypt, LXX Ex.8.21 (17), Ps.77(78).45.
