One may compare first Lat. [[spissus]] (< <b class="b2">*spid-tos</b> or <b class="b2">*spit-tos</b>) <b class="b2">extended, esp. in time, slow, prolonged</b>, also [[close]], [[dense]], [[thick]] (= <b class="b3">σπιδνόν</b>); on the development of the meaning Persson Beitr. 1, 386ff. with extensive treatment.
