From there [[maltreat]], [[revile]], [[ridicule]] in <b class="b3">στέμβω</b>, <b class="b3">-άζω</b>, <b class="b3">στόβος</b>, <b class="b3">-έω</b>? Unclear remain thus <b class="b3">στόμφος</b>, <b class="b3">-αξ</b> etc. -- An attractive connection seems possile with the Germ. deverbative OHG [[stampfōn]], MLD [[stampen]], OSw. [[stampa]] etc. [[stampfen]], smash' with OHG [[stampf]] m. <b class="b2">instrument with which to struck etc.</b>, PGm. <b class="b2">*stamp-</b> (IE <b class="b2">*stomb-</b>); s.
