|etymtx=Grammatical information: v.<br />Meaning: <b class="b2">he took</b> (Il. 8, 43).<br />Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [368] <b class="b2">*gem-</b> <b class="b2">seize, take etc.</b><br />Etymology: <b class="b3">γέντο</b> is like <b class="b3">λέκτο</b> <b class="b2">he laid down</b> either a middle root aorist, or an <b class="b2">s-</b> aorist with lost <b class="b3">σ</b> (<b class="b3">*λέκ-σ-το</b>, <b class="b3">*γέμ-σ-το</b>; on <b class="b3">μ</b> s. below), cf. Schwyzer 751 Zus. 2. Both verbs have analogical full grade. Not from <b class="b2">*gm̥to</b> (Wackernagel Unt. 175 A.). To <b class="b3">γέντο</b> < <b class="b3">*γέμτο</b> probably ipv. <b class="b3">ἀπό-γεμε ἄφελκε</b>. <b class="b3">Κύπριοι</b> and <b class="b3">ὕγ-γεμος συλλαβή</b>. <b class="b3">Σαλαμίνιοι</b> H. From other languages have been compared MIr. [[gemel]] [[fetter]], Latv. <b class="b2">gùmstu</b>, <b class="b2">gùmt</b> <b class="b2">seize etc.</b>; OCS <b class="b2">žьmǫ</b>, <b class="b2">žęti</b> [[σφίγγειν]], [[comprimere]]. This word has again been compared with Gr. <b class="b3">γέμω</b> <b class="b2">be full</b> (q. v.), which could be the thematic present beside athematic (sigmatic) aorist <b class="b3">γέντο</b>. - Pok. 368f.
