For <b class="b3">στέμβω</b> a meaning [[push violently]], [[shake caeselessly]] is fitting, also for <b class="b3">ἀστεμ-φής</b> [[unshakeable]] (diff., hardly correct, s. v.). From there [[maltreat]], [[revile]], [[ridicule]] in <b class="b3">στέμβω</b>, <b class="b3">-άζω</b>, <b class="b3">στόβος</b>, <b class="b3">-έω</b>? Unclear remain thus <b class="b3">στόμφος</b>, <b class="b3">-αξ</b> etc. -- An attractive connection seems possile with the Germ. deverbative OHG [[stampfōn]], MLD [[stampen]], OSw. [[stampa]] etc. [[stampfen]], smash' with OHG [[stampf]] m. <b class="b2">instrument with which to struck etc.</b>, PGm. <b class="b2">*stamp-</b> (IE <b class="b2">*stomb-</b>); s. WP. 2, 623f., Pok. 1011 ff., also W.-Hofmann s.
