L. 498 [?]).<br />Origin: IE [Indo-European] [938] <b class="b2">*(s)ker-</b> [[cut]]<br />Etymology: Prob. as subst. adj. "shaven place" to <b class="b3">κορσός</b> *shaven (after H. = <b class="b3">κορμός</b>), with <b class="b3">σ-ο-</b>suffix to <b class="b3">κείρειν</b>; cf. esp. <b class="b3">κορσοῦν κείρειν</b> H., <b class="b3">ἀ-κερσε-κόμης</b> and [[κουρά]] (s. v.). This interpretation goes back to antiquity, e. g. Poll. 2, 32: <b class="b3">καὶ κόρσας τινες ἐκάλεσαν τὰς τρίχας διὰ τὸ κείρεσθαι</b>; it was in recent times defended by Wackernagel KZ 29, 128 and Schwyzer 285. Only [[hair]] is not the original meaning, but a poetic metaphor; we have to start from <b class="b2">haircut (a the side of the head)</b>, s. Frisk GHÅ 57 : 4, 14ff. with many parallels. - Not (s.
