One connects the word with [[εἰλέω]], [[ἴλλω]] etc., comparing [[Ϝάλη]] (cod. [[ὑάλη]]) [[σκώληξ]] H. DELG assumes the root <b class="b2">*uel-</b> (Pok. 1140) which, lengthened with <b class="b2">-d-</b>, is seen in OS [[wealtan]], OHG [[walzan]]. Taillardat, REA 58, 1956, 191 n. 3, reconstructs <b class="b2">*uol-n-ed-mi</b>, with anaptyictic <b class="b2">-i-</b>. The <b class="b2">i-</b>epenthesis is without parallel, and an old nasal-present is improbable. Rather the suffix <b class="b2">-ind-</b> is non-IE. In that case the root could still be IE. But Fur. 130 n. 59 compares [[καλινδέομαι]] <b class="b2">id.</b> as a variant with <b class="b2">k-</b>; there are several variants with k\/zero among substr. words (the change [[κ]]\/zero cannot be explained from an IE laryngeal).
