[[spernō]] eig. *push away', [[reject]], Germ., e.g. OHG [[spurnan]] <b class="b2">kick out with the foot, the heel</b>, prob. also Arm. <b class="b2">spaṙnam</b> [[threaten]] (Meillet BSL 31, 52). Further forms with rich lit. in WP. 2, 668ff., Pok. 992f., W.-Hofmann s. [[spernō]], Fraenkel s. <b class="b2">spìrti</b>, also in Bq. -- Because of the late and rare ocurrence of [[σπαίρω]] Güntert . 146 wants to see in it, perhaps corectly, a cross of earlier and much commoner [[ἀσπαίρω]] (s. v.) with [[σκαίρω]].
