The connection with Skt. <b class="b2">iṣmá-</b> <b class="b2">spring, god(of love)</b> (Lex.), [[iccháti]] (< <b class="b2">*is-sḱé-ti</b>) [[wish]] (Curtius, Fick, Solmsen KZ 29, 78f., Sommer Lautstud. 27f.), is semantically perhaps not impossible (meaning <b class="b2">god(of love)</b> however invented?, s. Mayrhofer KEWA s. v.), leaves the Greek wordformation unexplained. So perh. rather with Bally MSL 12, 321 from <b class="b2">*si-smero-s</b> resp. <b class="b2">*si-smer-i̯ō</b> with intensifying reduplikation as in Av. <b class="b2">hi-šmarǝnt-</b> <b class="b2">well-conducted</b> to Skt. [[smárati]] (< <b class="b2">*sméreti</b>) [[remember]] (hardly to [[μέριμνα]], [[μέρμερος]], [[μάρτυς]]). So [[ἵμερος]], [[ἱμείρω]] prop. [[lively remembering]] etc. (Cf. Skt. <b class="b2">smará-</b> m. [[love]]); [[ἵμερος]] could be postverbal to [[ἱμείρω]] (Risch 248). Cf. also Schwyzer 282 a. 423.
