Since long (Legerlotz KZ 8, 417) connected with some Cypriot H.glosses: <b class="b3">ἰμπάταον ἔμβλεψον</b>. [[Πάφιοι]], <b class="b3">ἰνκαπάταον ἐγκατάβλεψον</b>. The here found aor. <b class="b3">πατά-σαι</b> may also be seen in <b class="b3">καπατάς καθορῶν</b>. <b class="b3">παρὰ Εὔκλῳ</b> H. (cod. <b class="b3">κάπατας καθαρόν</b> ... [[Εὑηλῶν]]), if contracted from <b class="b3">*πατάσας</b> (Hoffmann Dial. 1, 118); diff. Bechtel Lex. 270 (with M. Schmidt): from pres. <b class="b3">*πάταμι</b>. The form <b class="b3">ἀνεπάταξεν ἐξ ὕπνου ἀνέβλεψεν</b>, which stands beside it, one is prepared to consider as, <b class="b2">elevate (the eyes)</b> and to connect with [[πατάσσω]]; here further <b class="b3">καπατᾶ κατακόψεις</b>. [[Πάφιοι]] H., prob. with Hoffmann [[l.c.]] from <b class="b3">*πατά-ω</b> [[beat]] (in <b class="b3">πάτα-γος</b>, <b class="b3">πατά-σσω</b>). Is also <b class="b3">πατά-σαι</b> [[glance]], and finally also <b class="b3">πα-πτ-αίνω</b> semantiscally to be connected? Or the last to [[πέτομαι]] from fluttering around of the look? - The word can hardly be IE.
