In Greek mythology, Geryon (/ˈdʒɪəriən/ or /ˈɡɛriən/; also Geryone; Greek: Γηρυών, genitive: Γηρυόνος), son of Chrysaor and Callirrhoe, the grandson of Medusa and the nephew of Pegasus, was a fearsome giant who dwelt on the island Erytheia of the mythic Hesperides in the far west of the Mediterranean. A more literal-minded later generation of Greeks associated the region with Tartessos in southern Iberia. Geryon was often described as a monster with human faces.

According to Hesiod Geryon had one body and three heads, whereas the tradition followed by Aeschylus gave him three bodies. A lost description by Stesichoros said that he has six hands and six feet and is winged; there are some mid-sixth-century Chalcidian vases portraying Geryon as winged. Some accounts state that he had six legs as well while others state that the three bodies were joined to one pair of legs. Apart from these bizarre features, his appearance was that of a warrior. He owned a two-headed hound named Orthrus, which was the brother of Cerberus, and a herd of magnificent red cattle that were guarded by Orthrus, and a herder Eurytion, son of Erytheia.

In the fullest account in the Bibliotheke of Pseudo-Apollodorus, Heracles was required to travel to Erytheia, in order to obtain the Cattle of Geryon (Γηρυόνου βόες) as his tenth labour. On the way there, he crossed the Libyan desert and became so frustrated at the heat that he shot an arrow at Helios, the Sun. Helios "in admiration of his courage" gave Heracles the golden chariot he used to sail across the sea from west to east each night. Heracles used it to reach Erytheia, a favorite motif of the vase-painters. Such a magical conveyance undercuts any literal geography for Erytheia, the "red island" of the sunset.

When Heracles reached Erytheia, no sooner had he landed than he was confronted by the two-headed dog, Orthrus. With one huge blow from his olive-wood club, Heracles killed the watchdog. Eurytion the herdsman came to assist Orthrus, but Heracles dealt with him the same way.

On hearing the commotion, Geryon sprang into action, carrying three shields, three spears, and wearing three helmets. He pursued Heracles at the River Anthemus but fell victim to an arrow that had been dipped in the venomous blood of the Lernaean Hydra, shot so forcefully by Heracles that it pierced Geryon's forehead, "and Geryon bent his neck over to one side, like a poppy that spoils its delicate shapes, shedding its petals all at once".

Heracles then had to herd the cattle back to Eurystheus. In Roman versions of the narrative, on the Aventine Hill in Italy, Cacus stole some of the cattle as Heracles slept, making the cattle walk backwards so that they left no trail, a repetition of the trick of the young Hermes. According to some versions, Heracles drove his remaining cattle past a cave, where Cacus had hidden the stolen animals, and they began calling out to each other. In others, Caca, Cacus' sister, told Heracles where he was. Heracles then killed Cacus, and according to the Romans, founded an altar where the Forum Boarium, the cattle market, was later held.

To annoy Heracles, Hera sent a gadfly to bite the cattle, irritate them and scatter them. The hero was within a year able to retrieve them. Hera then sent a flood which raised the level of a river so much, Heracles could not cross with the cattle. He piled stones into the river to make the water shallower. When he finally reached the court of Eurystheus, the cattle were sacrificed to Hera.

In the Aeneid, Vergil may have based the triple-souled figure of Erulus, king of Praeneste, on Geryon and Hercules' conquest of Geryon is mentioned in Book VIII. The Herculean Sarcophagus of Genzano features a three headed representation of Geryon.

Ο Γηρυόνης κατοικούσε στη νήσο Ερύθεια, στην ομιχλώδη Δύση, στα πέρατα του Ωκεανού. Geryon (griechisch Γηρυών), auch Geryones und Geryoneus, ist eine Gestalt der griechischen Mythologie.

Geryon war der Sohn des Chrysaor und der Okeanide Kallirrhoë. Nach Hesiod lebte er auf der Insel Erytheia („Rotland“, Land der Abendröte), die sich weit im Westen jenseits der Säulen des Herakles und nahe Gadeira (Cádiz) oder unter den westlichen Inseln der Hesperiden befunden haben soll. Laut Hekataios herrschte Geryon hingegen in der Gegend um den Ambrakischen Golf.[1]

Geryon besaß drei an der Hüfte zusammengewachsene Leiber und wird oft gerüstet mit drei Schwertern und Schilden sowie manchmal geflügelt dargestellt. Sein außergewöhnlich schönes Vieh, eine Herde roter Stiere, wurde von dem Hirten Eurytion und dem zweiköpfigen Hund Orthos, einem Bruder des Kerberos, oder auch von Kerberos selbst bewacht.

Die zehnte Aufgabe des Herakles bestand darin, diese Herde zu rauben. Herakles brachte die Rinder in seine Gewalt, indem er Orthos und Eurytion mit seiner Keule erschlug. Als Menoites, der in der Nähe das Vieh des Hades weidete, Geryon von diesem Überfall berichtete, eilte er herbei und forderte Herakles am Fluss Anthemos zum Kampf heraus. Herakles tötete ihn mit einem Pfeil, der mit dem Blut der Hydra getränkt war. Hera, die zur Unterstützung des Geryon gekommen war, wurde von Herakles ebenfalls verwundet und in die Flucht geschlagen.

Geryons Grab wurde in Gades (Cádiz) vermutet, wo laut Flavius Philostratos (Vit. Apollon. V, 5) auf dem Grabhügel Geryons zwei wundersame Bäume von einer durch Kreuzung aus Kiefer und Pechkiefer entstandenen dritten Art standen, von deren Rinde Blut tropfte. Gebeine Geryons sollen auch in Heiligtümern in Olympia und Theben aufbewahrt worden sein. Ein Orakel des Geryon befand sich in Patavium (Padua).

Aufgrund seiner Dreileibigkeit wurde Geryon in der klassischen lateinischen Literatur gerne mit Beiwörtern wie tricorpor, triformis oder tergeminus apostrophiert. Die christlichen Autoren führten ihn teils als historisch verbürgtes Monstrum an, oder erklärten ihn auch als Fabelwesen, wobei im letzteren Fall dann in der Tradition von Isidor von Sevilla (Etym. XI, iii, 28) der wahre historische Kern der Fiktion („fictum“) so gesehen wurde, dass es sich in Wirklichkeit um drei Brüder gehandelt habe, zwischen denen solche Eintracht bestand, dass gleichsam eine einzige Seele in drei Leibern lebte („tres fratres tantae concordiae ut in tribus corporibus quasi una anima esset“).

J.-C.) ne mentionne Géryon qu'à titre de comparaison: Il le dote de trois corps joints à la taille. Stésichore le décrit, dans un texte perdu, avec six bras et trois corps. À cause de cette particularité physique il est aussi surnommé « tricorpor, triformis » ou « tergeminus ». L’historien Justin Trogue Pompée affirme quant à lui: « On raconte, en outre, que Géryon lui-même ne fut pas d’une nature triple tel qu’il est révélé par les fables, mais bien trois frères qui se montraient d’une telle concorde, qu’on les voyait tous comme une âme d’un [seul] règne ». Il affirme ainsi que Géryon eut été non pas un homme à trois têtes, mais bien trois frères.

Le lieu de résidence de Géryon est d'abord décrit comme une île à l'ouest de la Méditerranée à Erytheia parfois assimilée à l'île de León. Avec Diodore de Sicile, les terres où paît le bétail de Géryon sont baignées par l'océan et il identifie ces terres comme étant habitées par les Lusitans au-delà des Colonnes d'Hercule.

Gerione (in greco antico: Γηρυών, Ghēryốn) è un personaggio della mitologia greca figlio di Crisaore e di Calliroe e fratello di Echidna.

Gerione era il Re dell'Isola dell'Eritea, situata nell'Oceano occidentale e che si estendeva fino ai confini di Tartesso e possedeva una mandria di vacche rosse consacrate ad Apollo che erano sorvegliate dal pastore Euritione (figlio di Ares e dell'esperide Eritea) e dal cane a due teste Ortro.

La cattura dei buoi e l'uccisione di Gerione, Ortro ed Euritione costituirono la decima fatica di Eracle, infatti Euristeo ordinò a Eracle di catturare quei buoi ed Eracle partì notando la barca dorata di Helios che fece dare in prestito. Giunto sull'isola di Gerione lo uccise e si prese i buoi. Era arrabbiata mandò uno sciame di mosche a uccidere i buoi ma Eracle sconfisse anche loro.
