Schwyzer 298f.; v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 21, who points to Maced. [[γλέπου]] = [[βλέπω]]. Szemerényi, Studia Pagliaro 3, 1969, 236f: from <b class="b3">-βλωψ</b> from [[βάλλω]] and <b class="b3">ὠπ-</b>, [[cast a glance]]; improbable. It is possible that the verb and the noun [[βλέφαρον]] are unrelated; in that case the latter word may have been orig. <b class="b3">*γλέφαρον</b> and have influenced the verb. But it seems more probable that they were cognate, [[β]]\/γ and [[π]]\/[[φ]] pointing to a Pre-Gr. word (Fur. 389); but the first variation is rare. Pre-Greek had labio-velars which developed not always in the same way as the inherited equivalents. There is no etym. Perhaps Slav. [[glipati]] points to a (European) substratum.
