   A clog up, γῆ ὑγρὰ... ἐὰν ξηρανθῇ, σ. τὸ σπέρμα Thphr.CP3.23.1:—Pass., τὰ μὲν ἄνω [τῆς γῆς] συναληλίφθαι διὰ τοὺς ὄμβρους have been clogged up, turned into impermeable clay, Arist.Mete.365a21; coalesce, -ομένων ἀλλήλοις τῶν περάτων Simp.in Ph.892.9, cf.931.17.    b anoint thoroughly, Sor.1.46, 64, al.; rub in thoroughly, Dsc.Eup.1.233.    c metaph., gloss over, whitewash, minimize, τἀγαθὰ μὲν ὑπερεπαινεῖν, τὰ δὲ φαῦλα συναλείφειν Arist.Rh.1383b33.    2 Gramm., unite two syllables into one, D.H.Comp.22, etc.:—Pass., coalesce, of two syllables, Id.Dem. 38; cf. συναλιφή.    II assist in anointing, τινα Plu.Pomp.73, cf.
