Μισῶ σοφιστήν, ὅστις οὐχ αὑτῷ σοφός → I hate the sage who is not wise for himself → Odi professum sapere, qui sibi non sapit → Den Weisen hass' ich, der in eigner Sache Tor

Menander, Monostichoi, 332

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: pl. n.
Meaning: raised bank of river or ditch, dike, border of the sea, border for plants (Hyp.).
Other forms: rarely sg. ἄνδηρον
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Unexplained. Fur. 204 n. 10 thinks that -ηρον is non-IE. Thus Neumann Unters. 91: "Auch im Griechischen machen mehrere Wörter des Bedeutungsfeldes 'künstliche Bewässerung' einen nicht-idg. Eindruck: ἄρδω bewässere, γοργύρα unterirdicher Absurgskanal, ἄνδηρα." Fur. 347compares the Thracian place name ῎Ενδηρον, for which there is little ground.
