   A an insect which lives on the roots of plants, prob. a kind of beetle, which has a strong smell when attacked, Ar. Pax1078(hex.), cf. Arist.HA542a10 (v.l. σπονδύλη), 604b19, Thphr. HP9.14.3.    II σπονδύλη· ἡ γαλῆ παρ' Ἀττικοῖς, Hsch.
