   A torch, Ar.Lys.308; ὑπὸ φανοῦ πορεύεσθαι X.Lac.5.7; ποῖος φ. τοιοῦτος οἷος ὁ ἥλιος; Alex.87; distd. from λύχνος, Anaxandr.48, cf. Phryn.40; but prob. = λύχνος in UPZ5.18, 6.15 (ii B. C.), Stud.Pal.10.251.2 (vi A. D.); μετὰ φανῶν καὶ λαμπάδων Ev.Jo.18.3, cf. PLond.3.1159.59 (ii A.
