In der Kunstsprache hieß jeder Kopf so, der in einen viereckigen Fußpfeiler od. eine Säule auslief, Herme; dergleichen Ἑρμαῖ standen in Athen auf mehreren öffentlichen Plätzen u. vor den Häusern, Thuc. 6, 27. – Man bemerke Ἑρμῆν ἕλκειν, den letzten Zug thun, weil bei den Schmäusen der letzte Becher dem Hermes gebracht wurde, Strattis bei Ath. XI, 473 c; VLL. – Ἑρμῆς κοινός, bei einem unverhofften Fund, ἕρμαιον, halb Part, Arist. rhet. 2, 24; Luc. nav. 12 u. A. – Plut. sagt καθάπερ ὅταν ἐν συλλόγῳ τινὶ γένηται σιωπή, τὸν Ἁρμῆν ἐπεισεληλυθέναι φασίν, de garrul. 2, wofür wir sagen: ein Engel flog durchs Zimmer.
