   A search carefully, inquire diligently, ἐμοὶ οὐ φίλον ἐστὶ μεταλλῆσαι καὶ ἐρέσθαι Od.14.378; οὐκέτι μέμνηται... οὐδὲ μεταλλᾷ 15.23.    2 c. acc. pers., inquire of, question, σε . . οὔτ' εἴρομαι οὔτε μεταλλῶ Il.1.553, cf. Od.3.69, 16.287; but ἀντεφθέγξατο . . μετάλλασέν τέ νιν the voice sought him out, Pi.O.6.62.    3 c. acc. objecti, inquire about, ask after, μή τι σὺ ταῦτα διείρεο μηδὲ μετάλλα Il.1.550, cf. 5.516; ἕταροι δὲ κατέκταθεν, οὓς σὺ μεταλλᾷς 13.780, cf. 10.125, Od.19.190; ἕκαστα μ. 14.128, cf. 16.465: also with Preps., μεταλλῆσαι . . ἀμφὶ πόσει 17.554; ἀμφ' ἑτάροιο μ. τὰ ἕκαστα A.R.4.1471; θεῶν πέρι τοῖα μ. APl.4.183.    4 c. dupl. acc., ask one about a thing, ask him a question, τοῦτο δέ τοι ἐρέω, ὅ μ' ἀνείρεαι ἠδὲ μεταλλᾷς Il.3.177; ἔπος ἄλλο μ. καὶ ἐρέσθαι Νέστορα Od.3.243. (Poet. word, also in late Prose, POxy.237 vii 40 (ii A.D.), Them.Or.22.266c: expld. by Gramm. as search after other things (μετὰ ἄλλα), Eust.148.10, etc., but this is very dub.)
