DELG assumes the root <b class="b2">*uel-</b> (Pok. 1140) which, lengthened with <b class="b2">-d-</b>, is seen in OS [[wealtan]], OHG [[walzan]]. Taillardat, REA 58, 1956, 191 n. 3, reconstructs <b class="b2">*uol-n-ed-mi</b>, with anaptyictic <b class="b2">-i-</b>. The <b class="b2">i-</b>epenthesis is without parallel, and an old nasal-present is improbable. Rather the suffix <b class="b2">-ind-</b> is non-IE. In that case the root could still be IE.
