"what belongs to the middle of the house", compound of <b class="b3">μέσος</b> and the zero grade of the word for [[house]], <b class="b3">δεμ-</b>, <b class="b3">δμ-</b>, seen in <b class="b3">δεσ-πότης</b> and <b class="b3">δά-πεδον</b> (s. vv.; cf. on <b class="b3">δόμος</b>) with <b class="b3">α-</b>suffix: <b class="b3">μεσό-δμ-α</b> like <b class="b3">*ἑκατόμ-βϜ-α</b> (J.Schmidt Pluralbild. 221f., Schwyzer 425 a. 449). From housebuilding the term was transferred to shipbuilding.
